Did PlayStation 6 Just Get a Concrete Release Window?

Supermassive Games' canceled Blade Runner game has apparently revealed the release year for the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Last week, it was revealed that Blade Runner: Time to Live – a story-driven action-adventure set in the Blade Runner universe and developed by Until Dawn and The Quarry creator Supermassive Games – was allegedly canceled before it ever had a chance to see the light of day.

But while the news about the shutdown of the game might have disappointed fans of the genre, who have already completed Cyberpunk 2077 ten times over and are now craving a new gaming experience, it turned out to be more than uplifting for console gamers, as it apparently revealed the release window for PlayStation 6 and a new Xbox console.

According to a report by Insider Gaming, the project was allegedly shut down sometime between its entry into pre-production in September 2024 and March 2025, when pre-production was scheduled to end. The single-player game was planned to offer 10–12 hours of gameplay, with a full development budget of around $45 million – $9 million of which was allocated for external performance capture and acting talent – and was targeting a September 2027 release.

This is where it gets interesting: besides the usual list of supported platforms (PC, PS5, Xbox X/S), the list of hardware Blade Runner: Time to Live was supposed to release on also included "Gen 10 Xbox and PlayStation systems." Considering how unlikely it is for a development studio to make assumptions about other companies' hardware release dates, it can be speculated that Supermassive has inside knowledge of when the PlayStation 6 and new Xbox are set to launch and were planning the Blade Runner game accordingly.

Adding fuel to the flame of speculation is the fact that Nordisk, the parent company of Supermassive Games, has a close partnership with Sony, which would likely make them and their subsidiaries well-acquainted with under-the-hood details on PS6's launch.

"We represent one of the world’s biggest publishers and brands in gaming – PlayStation," reads the company's website. "For almost three decades, Nordisk Interactive has acted as the Nordic hub for PlayStation, managing all areas of the business, including sales, marketing, and logistics. We have released five mainline consoles – from the original PlayStation to PlayStation 5 – as well as a wide selection of accessories and award-winning software titles from franchises such as Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, and Marvel's Spider-Man.

Paired with the rumored game's September 2027 release month, it can be assumed that the next-gen consoles will be available by that time, apparently giving us a concrete release window.

While it's basically an open secret that Microsoft and Sony have something in the works, until the Blade Runner report, any news about next-gen consoles' release windows had been nothing but guesstimates. But if this rumor proves true – and given Supermassive's reluctance to share further details, it most likely is – console gamers would finally have the first somewhat confirmed year to look forward to: 2027.
