Players are criticizing the game for lacking two-player co-op, being capped at 60 FPS, and not featuring voice or text chat.
Elden Ring Nightreign is finally here, and proving game journalists right for once, the gaming community's reaction to the release hasn't been one of widespread praise and endorsement, with the game currently holding the lowest Steam rating out of all FromSoftware titles featured on the marketplace.
FromSoftware
Despite being related to arguably the most popular and beloved video game of the 2020s, Elden Ring Nightreign received Mixed reviews on Steam, with only 65% of user reviews being positive. For comparison, the second-worst FromSoftware title on the platform is Metal Wolf Chaos XD, a remaster of the 2004 third-person shooter released in 2019, which has a score of 82%, while all of their soulslikes sit comfortably in the high 80s and 90s.
Out of all the things Nightreign has been lambasted for – barring the obvious negative reviews from those unhappy with FromSoftware's foray into the roguelike genre – the most common complains pertain to the lack of two-player co-op, the absence of voice and text chat, which makes communication impossible and, in turn, makes the game not really fun to play solo with two random people in a lobby, the framerate being capped at 60 FPS, and the overall gameplay and readability being clunky and unsatisfying. In other words, a host of issues that seem relatively easy to fix and make one question why a studio as revered and experienced as FromSoftware didn't address them before launch.
At the same time, even though a third of players haven't found Nightreign an experience worth giving a thumbs-up to, the game still easily pulled massive numbers on Steam.
At its peak, it reached over 313,000 concurrent players, making it the third-best game on the marketplace in 2025, behind only Schedule I with 459,000 and Monster Hunter Wilds with 1.38 million. With the weekend still ahead, Elden Ring Nightreign may yet overtake Schedule I and take silver, however, it remains to be seen how the game's underwhelming reception will affect its momentum, if at all.
